Spanish wine Protected Designations of Origin in global markets
Abstract
Spain is one of the main exporters of wine in the world and operates simultaneously in different markets, subject to different competition models: price and quality. This paper analyzes the protected wines segment under the name of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), despite playing a secondary role in Spanish wine exports. The PDOs with a higher exported volume are found in the Ebro Valley, Catalonia, Levante, Sherry, and the center of the country. The Spanish quality wine is aimed primarily at the European market, especially the United Kingdom and Germany. Outside Europe, the North American market stands out. There are different models among Spanish PDOs, the average price of exported wine is an important element for their identification. High priced PDOs commercialize wine in international markets where the new wine culture is more settled; The PDOs that market wines at more moderate prices have greater weight in emerging markets.
