The influence of the nature of raw materials on the biochars’ characteristics

A significant increase in the amount of sewage sludge from treatment plants contributes to the development of new methods for waste treatment and disposal. The paper demonstrates the possibility of obtaining and further using biochar based on sewage sludge. The physicochemical characteristics and sorption capacity of the obtained material are determined. A comparative analysis of the characteristics of biochars based on wastewater sludge and those obtained by carbonization of birch wood sawdust is carried out. The carbonization conditions for biochars are the same. It is established that biochars obtained from various wastes (birch sawdust and wastewater sludge) exhibit comparable sorption capacities with respect to the organic dye methylene blue. Carrying out preliminary chemical modification with a KOH solution contributes to an increase in sorption by 1.1 – 1.4 times.
