Livestock has historically played a central role in Maharashtra, shaping its economy, traditions, festivals, and social systems. Beyond their contribution to agriculture and household livelihoods, animals such as bullocks, cows, buffaloes, goats, and poultry are deeply embedded in cultural and religious practices. The celebration of festivals like Bail Pola, cattle fairs, and folk traditions reflects the reverence farmers hold for their animals. This paper reviews the significance of livestock in Maharashtrian culture, examining its role in agrarian livelihoods, rituals, folklore, and social identity. The study also highlights the changes brought by modernization, while stressing the importance of safeguarding livestock- linked traditions as part of Maharashtra’s cultural heritage.
