The Communication Pattern of Reog Rukun Santoso Grogol Salatiga Tradition Performance

Reog Rukun Santoso was the oldest reog group in Salatiga, formed in 1967. This reog group was located in Grogol RW 4, Salatiga. What characterized Reog Rukun Santoso was the attraction of eating semprong (tubular lamp) and the spirit possession scene. This research explains how communication patterns in the reog tradition, especially Reog Rukun Santoso Grogol, using an ethnographic communication approach. The research was conducted in descriptive qualitative research using Dell Hymes' communication ethnography approach. The data collection method was done by observation and in-depth interview. This research was conducted by directly observing the traditional performance and administering in-depth interviews with the chief, players, elders, and people who knew Reog Rukun Santoso. The recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed using ethnographic communication theory. The results revealed that the Reog Rukun Santoso Grogol performance consisted of four series of events, including pre-rituals, opening, primary and the closing of the performance. The study focused on the communicative situations, communicative events, and communicative actions elements, which can be elaborated into SPEAKING communication components.
