Diabetes is one of the main causes of end-stage chronic kidney disease (ESRD) in the world. However, the knowledge of diabetic patients about this complication remains limited. This study evaluates the level of knowledge regarding the prevention of ESRD among 100 patients followed in four urban health centers in the province of Kenitra (Morocco). Only 14% of participants knew that diabetes could lead to ESRD, while 86% were unaware, although 75% declared having received preventive information. The main determinants of lack of knowledge are low educational level and advanced age. These results confirm the urgency of strengthening therapeutic education in primary care, by adapting it to literacy level and sociocultural context.
