Conjugal violence influence on the mental health of married couples in the city of Kenitra

Background: Violence within married couples can cause several damages relating to the physical and psychological integrity of the partners. The aim is to identify to what extent a conflictual relationship in a married couple can increase anxiety and depression of both partners.
Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the premises of an association specializing in supporting women and men in a conflictual marital situation. Data was collected between June and July 2020. Self-administrated questionnaire was presented with assistance for more explications if needed. 42 participants were included in this research (34 women and 8 men). Average age was (35.79 SD±9.623). (CTS2S), (PHQ 9) and (GAD 7) were used.
Results: Conjugal violence, depression and anxiety are linked. Both men and women are affected (p >.05). Sociodemographic characteristics are predictive of conjugal violence: level of study (β = -0.499; p <.05), statement of violence (β = 0.338; p <.05), family presence (β = 0.236; p <.05) and economic level (β = -0.406; p <.05). Women are more anxious and depressed than men (p <.001; p <.05).
Conclusion: Conjugal violence has negative consequences on couple’s mental health. Moreover, cognitive negotiation can decrease symptoms and promote the solution.
