International competitiveness of the wine industry: Consistency of its indicators
Abstract
In recent years, the concept of competitiveness has gained significant importance in the context of an increasingly globalized economy. In this scenario, international wine markets have also undergone significant changes in its structure and in its performance that require appropriate tools in order to understand it. This paper analyses the current situation of these markets in terms of area, production, consumption and trade flows. It also assesses the competitive position of the Spanish wine industry shown by seven indicators of Revealed Comparative Advantage in relation with the main actors of the international wine market. Finally, it analyses cardinal, ordinal and dichotomous consistency in order to know which indicators are stable with each other -and therefore replaceable-, and which not, and therefore complementary in measuring the international competitiveness of the Spanish wine industry between 2000 and 2015, whose results show the existence of three groups of indicators, one whose indices only contemplate exports, another whose indices compute both exports and imports, and a last one in which two indicators of the two different nature coexist.
