This study explores how maritime professionals with extensive education and ten years of industry experience view the integration of urban agriculture and renewable energy systems in smart port city development. Through interviews with ten maritime professionals, the research reveals that professionals have strong capacity for understanding sustainable technology integration, which challenges common assumptions about technical education limitations. The study shows that maritime education’s strengths in systematic thinking and operational planning actually help rather than limit innovative approaches to sustainable port development. However, current maritime programs provide excellent analytical foundations but don’t adequately prepare graduates for the collaborative leadership that sustainable development requires. The research suggests enhancing rather than replacing current education, maintaining technical excellence while expanding skills in interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.
