Effects of Using a Back Exoskeleton in Logistics Tasks on Muscle Activity

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of a back exoskeleton on muscle activity, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and subjective discomfort in simulated logistics tasks such as sorting, stacking, and unloading. Fifteen participants (8male, 7female) performed the tasks while surface electromyography measured activity in the thoracic erector spinae (TES) and lumbar erector spinae (LES). Rating of perceived exertion (Borg scale) and discomfort were also assessed. Results showed that exoskeleton use significantly reduced muscle activity by 2%-9% for TES and 6%-15% for LES (p<0.05), and significantly decreased the rating of perceived exertion. The study concludes that back exoskeletons can effectively reduce muscle load and perceived exertion during logistics operations, though the reduction of discomfort requires further optimization. Future research should involve longer-duration simulations and explore applicability across different work environments.
